Game # 37 Cubs v. Marlins 7/17/12

The Marlins were in town. Ozzie Guillen is back in Chicago.

I admit my main reason for wanting to see the Marlins play was to see Logan Morrison, or LoMo, as he is more commonly known. I worried that he would heckle me for not being good-looking enough, as he often does to even his fans on twitter, but I didn't care. He fascinated me.

Well, we didn't meet him, but we did shout to him, made him smile, and he threw us two balls, which we did not catch and which two little boys got, even though they were clearly meant for us. Next time, I suppose.

I was prepared in my newly-made Steve Clevenger shirt! He loved it. Or pretended to, and that is enough for me.

Mike Bruce's little brother was back.

Here's my little LoMo at BP. I really love him.

I was excited that Travis Wood was pitching. Anibal Sanchez was pitching for the Marlins, so it seemed like it would be a good matchup, and it was!

I'm not sure why this was necessary.

Chicago man and long-time Cubs fan Jim Belushi was on hand to throw out the first pitch.

He was a jokester, and before pitching picked off a runner at second base where James Russell was waiting.

I'm not going to lie--I am surprised there are Ozzie fans in Miami. Him and his big mouth, plus not much of a season...Some White Sox fans loved him, but I think that was mostly sentimentality over his playing days and the 2005 championship. Toward the end of 2011, not many Sox fans cared for him.

David DeJesus got things started with a single.

Then he went to second on a Castro single.

Then he got to third when Rizzo grounded into a double play. But he didn't score.

Here's two kids who might fight later.

In the bottom of the third, DeJesus doubled. Seriously--do you see how often this guy gets on base? Best leadoff hitter in baseball. He didn't get to go anywhere, though.

The Marlins scored three in the top of the third. Boo.

In the bottom of the fourth, Rizzo singled. He went to third when LaHomer singled.

But that was it.

In the top of the fifth, more heartbreak for the Cubs. Travis was off his usual game. Lots of Marlins runs. By the end of the half, the Marlins were ahead 8-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jeff Baker did what he could and hit a home run to try to help.

Rafael Dolis pitched part of the fifth and all of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Geo got a two-out double.

JoJo was safe on an error and Geo scored.

Valbuena singled, moving JoJo to second.

Then Jeff Baker walked. Bases loaded. But nothing.

Jairo Ascencio came on to pitch the seventh. There was a home run. Marlins lead 9-2.

Jim Belushi tried to cheer us up by singing the stretch and urging the Cubs to get some runs.

Scottie.

With Geo at first, Steve Clevenger came in to hit in the eighth and he singled.

Valbuena doubled, driving in Geo and The Clev.

Luis advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Jeff Baker singled, driving in Luis.

End of the inning, 9-5 Marlins.

Also, here's another Twins fan. They are everywhere and it's great.

Scott Maine came in to pitch the ninth.

Steve Clevenger stayed in the game at THIRD!!!! So weird. That's where we usually sit so I was sad we weren't near him.

Matt Garza entertains.

And here's Heath Bell. I just love Heath. I'm just sad we have to try to hit against him.

Steve was on deck but never got a chance.

Cubs lose  9-5.
