Game #30, Mets at Cubs, 6/26/12

This was the day everyone had been waiting for. Praying for. Prophesying about. This day was the day that Anthony Rizzo came up to the bigs for the Cubs. I thought there would be billions of people. And there really were a lot inside. But outside, things were fine. Here I am at my favorite gate with my favorite gatekeeper Jim.

Here he is. The long-awaited Anthony Rizzo, who would save the Cubs from everything. Well, he did look pretty basebally.

Darwin is now trying to lead Anthony down the path of evil.

Samardzija.......

Here's David Wright again.

There were many many cameras. I was on tv a lot. #famous

Steve is like, just let me LIVE!

Just kidding, he came over. He really is the best.

I'm always excited to see him play!

Here's that Rizzo guy again.

Steve has some faces.

Here's Randy Wells. Pitching today.

As usual, Tony Campana signs autographs.

This sight is common, Rizzo during the national anthem with a hand hooked in his pants.

Always. I adore David's devotion.

Here's Rizzo at first. LaHomer is in right field.

David DeJesus started off the first with a single.

Anthony Rizzo started his Cubs debut with an infield single.

I thought the crowd was going to explode with happiness.

There it is, his first hit. Some people thought it should have been a "reached-on-an-error," but the scorers did not agree. Hit it is.

They didn't score, though.

LaHomer ended the inning by flying out. It's okay. He's still awesome.

Rizzo all dirtied up because he plays like a boss.

Steve Clevenger flied out in the second, but just hold your horses, people.

The Mets scored twice in the top of the second. In the bottom of the third, Anthony grounded out, but he moved over the runners so it wasn't a total loss.

Those runners scored, and so did LaHair, and the Cubs led 3-2.

With two men out and no outs in the top of the fourth, Scott Maine came in to relieve Wells.

The Mets scored one, tying the game, but not too shabby for Scotty.

Then The Clev started off the fourth with an infield single.

With two outs, Castro singled, and Steve got to third.

And then it happened. Anthony Rizzo's defining moment. Pressure on, tied game, runners at the corners...

And the superstar-to-be doubled, driving in the go-ahead run and putting Castro at third. The fans erupted in cheers so loud I couldn't talk to Angela next to me.

Soriano was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.

Bryan LaHair came up, and I just wanted him to drive in someone. I didn't want everyone to forget about what a great year he had had, just because Rizzo was up now.

But he struck out.

In the bottom of the sixth, with the Cubs still leading 4-3, James Russell came on.

And then he hit. I never see him bat.

Steve is ready to finish this up!

Shawn Camp came on to pitch in the top of the seventh.

There were some ejections.

Dale argued when Valbuena's errant throw caused Hairston to be safe.

Castro is liking this new infield.

Dale gives up.

This guy was having so much fun!

With Darwin on base in the eighth, Steve Clevenger, with a bit of speed in those legs, reached on an infield single. Then another carnival of errors.

Reed Johnson reached on an infield single, Darwin scored, and The Clev got to third on an errant throw by Ruben Tejada.

This hipster doesn't even know why he's at a game.

Then Marmol came in to try to Marmol things up a bit in the ninth. But other than a walk to David Wright, he was excellent, and Cubs win 5-3.

Of course everyone wanted to talk to Rizzo.

But people still wanted to talk to David too.

And of course, Garza got Rizzo good.

This picture makes me laugh. On Twitter, Ian is always like, "yeah, come to the game and I'll sign for you after and take pictures." But then after the game he always pretends he's on the phone. It's okay. You can just say you can't stop.
